چکیده

In this paper, we aim to design sparse D-optimal (determinantoptimal) pose-graph SLAM problems through the synthesis of sparse graphs with the maximum weighted number of spanning trees. Characterizing graphs with the maximum number of spanning trees is an open problem in general. To tackle this problem, several new theoretical results are established in this paper, including the monotone log-submodularity of the weighted number of spanning trees. By exploiting these structures, we design a complementary pair of near-optimal efficient approximation algorithms with provable guarantees. Our theoretical results are validated using random graphs and a publicly available pose-graph SLAM

Information-theoretic compression of pose graphs for laser-based SLAM

In graph-based simultaneous localization and mapping, the pose graph grows over time as the robot gathers information about the environment. An ever growing pose graph, however, prevents long-term mapping with mobile robots. In this paper, we address the problem of efficient information-theoretic compression of pose graphs. Our approach estimates the mutual information between the laser measure...

Human-in-the-Loop SLAM

Building large-scale, globally consistent maps is a challenging problem, made more difficult in environments with limited access, sparse features, or when using data collected by novice users. For such scenarios, where state-of-the-art mapping algorithms produce globally inconsistent maps, we introduce a systematic approach to incorporating sparse human corrections, which we term Human-in-the-L...

Pose Graph Compression for Laser-Based SLAM

The pose graph is a central data structure in graph-based SLAM approaches. It encodes the poses of the robot during data acquisition as well as spatial constraints between them. The size of the pose graph has a direct influence on the runtime and the memory requirements of a SLAM system since it is typically used to make data associations and within the optimization procedure. In this paper, we...

Path Planning with Pose SLAM IRI Technical Report

The probabilistic belief networks that result from standard feature-based simultaneous localization and map building (SLAM) approaches cannot be directly used to plan trajectories. The reason is that they produce a sparse graph of landmark estimates and their probabilistic relations, which is of little value to find collision free paths for navigation. In contrast, we argue in this paper that P...
